The short version
- A sitz bath is a shallow, warm soak that soothes the perineal area and eases hemorrhoids.
- Use warm (not hot) water, 10–15 minutes, 2–3 times a day as needed.
- An over-the-toilet basin is the easiest way to do it at home.
A sitz bath is one of the simplest, most soothing things you can do for healing "down there" after birth — whether you have stitches, swelling or postpartum hemorrhoids. It is just a shallow, warm soak of your bottom and hips, and it feels wonderful.
What you need
The easiest option is an over-the-toilet sitz bath basin — it sits on the rim of your toilet so you do not have to lower into a full bath. Many come with a bag that gently pours fresh warm water through. You can also use a clean bathtub with a few inches of water.
How to use a sitz bath, step by step
- Clean the basin, then fill it with warm — not hot — water (comfortable on the inside of your wrist).
- Place it securely on the toilet with the seat up, then sit so the area is fully submerged.
- Soak for 10–15 minutes. If using a flowing bag, let the water gently circulate.
- Pat dry gently with a soft towel or air-dry — do not rub. A peri bottle and clean pad afterwards keep things comfortable.
How often, and when to start
Two to three times a day is typical in the first weeks, and after bowel movements if you have hemorrhoids or stitches. You can usually start within a day of birth — check with your provider first if you had a complicated delivery.
Add-ins: helpful or hype?
Plain warm water is genuinely effective on its own. Some people add Epsom salt or witch hazel for extra soothing; skip anything perfumed, and ask your provider before adding anything if you have stitches.
